Finding a job and going through the interview process can be a tormenting one for some. Certain individuals are lucky enough to find their dream job the first time around and only after one interview, for others, it might be a different experience altogether – attending interview upon interview, but without any offers. There is, however, always light at the end of the tunnel and the best-kept interview secrets might just be the confidence booster you need.
Let’s be honest, with life returning to what is our new normal after the COVID-19 pandemic, the job market is still a scary place. The competition for top spots is more fierce than ever before and you really need to step up your game if you want to avoid getting lost in a sea of sameness. Just always remember – as eager as you are to find that dream job, so are employers waiting for the right candidate.
You should always ask questions in an interview, don’t hold back. Job seekers often make the mistake of letting a potential employer ask all the questions. Even if the interviewer asks you at the end if you have any questions for them, it is already a big opportunity missed. Ask questions during the interview as much as you possibly can. This will ensure that you use your time optimally to get to know the establishment better and show the interviewer a bit more about you as a person, without having to go through all the formalities that can make the conversation feel very forced.
Like everything else in life when it comes to communication, it is vitally important that you can back up anything you say with factual information. For example, if an interviewer asks where you see yourself in five years, please don’t say things like “I want to be rich and successful”. Even though it might be true, make sure that your answer to this question has something tangible it can relate to. This will show employers that you have clear goals and a vision for your career path going forward.
A key tip to success is to never allow competition to stand in your way. We all know that every job opportunity is fair game and the competition will be fierce, but forget about it and focus on you and convince interviewers why you are the best candidate for the job. There is no use in being self-conscious or anxious in your interview, you have no idea who the other candidates are so there is truly nothing to worry about!
Make sure that you place emphasis on your soft skills. These are not just buzzwords that you include in your CV and forget about. For example, when you are asked a question like “Tell us about how you managed that job efficiently”, apart from describing the job, you can also add additional information like how you showcased your skills to achieve success for the company and the skills that you had to apply to make this happen. Confidence is everything, so make the best version of yourself shine through. Opportunity is there for you to grab so make that first impression unforgettable!
