Which courses to take to build an impressive portfolio

Schools | Student teacher | Teachers - 20 Jan 2021

The interview has been passed with flying colours, the job offer has been signed and a new teaching career awaits, but this is where the real work starts. Long gone are the times where just a teaching qualification is enough to make teachers stand out from the crowd and be considered as a valuable asset.

Continuous Professional Teacher Development Points (CPTD) and Personal Development (PD) are two terms that are widely known by teachers. When carefully conceived, teacher portfolios can significantly advance a teacher’s professional growth. They can also ensure that evidence of exemplary teaching doesn’t vanish without a trace. Teachers have used learner portfolios to assess their abilities for many years and recently the same has been put in place for educator assessment. Yes, in-between marking, teaching and admin, a teacher portfolio might be time-consuming to put together, but these portfolios capture complexities of professional practice like nothing else can. They are not only effective tools to assess teachers but they also give teachers the opportunity to document their own teaching methods and reflect on where teachers can better themselves.

Obtaining CPTD points are quite straightforward and there are countless activities and courses that can assist teachers in building their portfolios. Below are a few examples of courses that are offered by The Eduvation Network and what these courses entail.

In this course, we look at how both teacher and learner benefit from feedback during their progress through the learning process. The course looks at Baseline, Formative, Diagnostic and Summative Assessment, as well as ways to relieve the teachers marking load.
